In the automotive world, there are two categories of vehicles. First, we have the practical models that cater to specific needs and constantly compete to deliver the best specs. Then, there are the others—the ones that make us forget reason, chosen not by logic but guided by emotion. The Volkswagen ID.Buzz falls into this second category, thanks to its retro-modern caricature inspired by an iconic model that left a lasting mark on an entire generation, evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for many. This German automaker's van boasts a cheerful appearance that's bound to turn heads wherever it goes.
This isn't the first time Volkswagen has considered reintroducing the Westfalia to the market, but the automaker never quite managed to bring together all the necessary ingredients for its van to achieve real success—until now. With the Volkswagen ID.Buzz initially unveiled as a concept, the model made quite a splash, sparking strong reactions upon its launch. It's likely this enthusiasm that motivated Volkswagen to push the model into production.
As is often the case with vehicles that tug at nostalgia while featuring electric propulsion, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is far from budget-friendly. In fact, one could say it's out of reach for most. The 1st Edition version starts at $80,610, even before considering optional extras. Fortunately, the minibus comes generously equipped as standard, leaving buyers to primarily choose exterior and interior colors with a few optional features. There's also the 1st Edition 4MOTION version, which, as the name suggests, adds all-wheel drive to the mix. This version starts at $86,110 and offers more color choices.
Technically, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is an electric minivan, but it's much more than that. The model has no direct competitors, and it's precisely this niche that will help it gain traction in various markets. Some will appreciate it for its retro appeal, while others will simply be drawn to its innovative concept.
Rivals: None
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz leaves no one indifferent. This vehicle exudes a strong personality and is unlike anything else on the market. Its retro yet modern aesthetic appeals to both younger and older audiences. Volkswagen nailed the styling, including the model's color palette, which features vibrant two-tone finishes.
The interior is as charming as the exterior, with an added touch of sophistication. The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz seats six or seven people, depending on the configuration, and offers up to 4,120 liters of cargo space—an impressive figure. It also features a 12.9-inch touchscreen that hosts almost all controls, a head-up display, a Harman Kardon Premium sound system, and adaptive cruise control as part of the standard package. The ID.Buzz delivers all the tech one could dream of in such a vehicle.
Two powertrains are available, starting with the single-motor version, delivering 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. However, the downside is that this power is sent to the rear wheels, which may not be ideal for Canadian road conditions, making this option less appealing locally. Thankfully, there's a 4MOTION dual-motor version that offers a total of 335 horsepower. This version also gives the ID.Buzz a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
Both versions are equipped with a 91 kWh battery pack. The single-motor version offers a range of around 425 kilometers, while the dual-motor version achieves approximately 390 kilometers. For a vehicle in this price range, these figures are slightly underwhelming.
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is one of a kind, making it a signature vehicle in its own right.
Volkswagen is one of the world's most significant automakers, and such success doesn't happen by chance. The brand listens to its customers and offers engaging, innovative products like the ID.Buzz. This is just the beginning for the minibus, and I'm particularly eager to see what Volkswagen will accomplish with this model in the years to come. It holds immense potential.
